Old Fashioned Strawberry Pie: A Classic Sweet Delight

  • Author: Mary
  • Total Time: 4-5 hours (includes chilling)
  • Yield: About 8 slices 1x

Description

This Old Fashioned Strawberry Pie is a timeless, refreshing dessert made with fresh, juicy strawberries. The sweetened fruit filling is thickened to perfection and nestled inside a flaky, buttery pie crust. Topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this pie is the ultimate summer treat, ideal for picnics, gatherings, or family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pie:

  • 1 9-inch deep-dish pie crust (baked)
  • 6 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and halved (divided)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Red food coloring (optional, for vibrant color)
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  • Prepare the crust: Bake the 9-inch deep-dish pie crust according to the package or recipe instructions. Allow it to cool completely before adding the filling.
  • Make the filling: In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, salt, and cold water. Stir until the cornstarch is dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens into a gel-like consistency (about 2-3 minutes). Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  • Add color (optional): If you want a more vibrant pie, add a few drops of red food coloring to the cooled mixture and stir to combine.
  • Assemble the pie: Arrange 4 cups of the halved strawberries in the cooled, baked pie crust. Pour the thickened syrup mixture over the strawberries, ensuring they’re well coated.
  • Chill the pie: Refrigerate the pie for at least 3-4 hours, or until the filling has fully set.
  • Serve: Before serving, garnish with the remaining 2 cups of halved strawberries on top. Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • If you prefer, you can skip the food coloring for a more natural, classic look.
  • Be sure to let the pie chill for several hours to allow the filling to set properly before slicing.
  • The pie can be made up to a day in advance, making it an ideal dessert for meal prep.
