Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup
- French bread, cut into 1-inch slices
- 5 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat until smooth and combined.
- Pour the sugar mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
- Arrange the slices of French bread in the baking dish in a single layer.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half cream, vanilla extract, orange zest, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring all slices are fully coated and soaked.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to absorb the egg mixture.
- The next day, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown and puffed up.
- Serve hot, and enjoy with syrup, whipped cream, or fresh fruit, if desired.
Notes
- For a more indulgent treat, serve with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup.
- This recipe can be made ahead, allowing you to have a delicious breakfast with minimal effort the next morning.
- If you don’t have French bread, you can substitute with challah or brioche for a richer flavor.
