  • Author: Mary
  • Total Time: 55–60 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings 1x

Description

This classic apple crisp features a perfectly spiced apple filling topped with a sweet, buttery oat topping. It’s a warm, comforting dessert that’s easy to prepare and perfect for fall or any time you crave a simple, homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Spiced Apples:

    • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other apple varieties can be used, can also be sliced)
    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

    Crisp Topping:

    • 1 cup light brown sugar
    • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but it may have a slightly different texture)
    • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • Pinch of kosher salt
    • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  • Prepare the Spiced Apples:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, toss the chopped apples with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice until well coated. Set aside.

  • Make the Crisp Topping:
In another bowl, combine the light brown sugar, old-fashioned oats, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of kosher salt. Stir to combine. Add the cold diced butter and use a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Assemble the Apple Crisp:
Transfer the spiced apples into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading them out evenly. Sprinkle the crisp topping over the apples.

  • Bake:
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

  • Serve:
Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. It’s great on its own or served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • Feel free to substitute other types of apples for Golden Delicious, such as Granny Smith or Fuji, depending on your preference.
  • For an extra touch, you can add a handful of chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans) to the topping mixture.
  • If you prefer a more tart flavor, try adding a little more lemon juice to the apples.
