Magnolia Bakery’s Famous Banana Pudding Recipe

  • Author: Mary
  • Total Time: 4 hours 15 minutes (preferably overnight)
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This iconic dessert from Magnolia Bakery is the perfect combination of creamy, fluffy, and sweet. Layers of rich vanilla pudding, fresh bananas, and crunchy Nilla wafers come together to create a truly irresistible treat. Whether for a family gathering or a special occasion, this banana pudding will surely impress!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk

  • 1 ½ cups ice-cold water

  • 1 (3.4 oz) package instant vanilla pudding mix (Jell-O brand recommended)

  • 3 cups heavy cream

  • 1 (11 oz) box vanilla wafers (Nabisco Nilla Wafers recommended)

  • 5 ripe bananas, sliced

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and ice-cold water until smooth. Add the instant vanilla pudding mix and whisk for about 2 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Set aside.

  • Whip the Cream: In a separate large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the heavy cream on high until soft peaks form. Be careful not to over-whip.

  • Fold the Whipped Cream: Gently fold the whipped cream into the prepared pudding mixture until well combined.

  • Assemble the Banana Pudding: In a 9×13-inch serving dish or a trifle bowl, layer the vanilla wafers, followed by a layer of sliced bananas. Then, spoon a layer of the pudding mixture over the bananas and wafers. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of pudding on top.

  • Chill: Cover the banana pudding and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the pudding to set.

  • Serve: Before serving, garnish with extra Nilla wafers and sliced bananas if desired.

Notes

  • For the best results, let the pudding sit overnight in the fridge for the flavors to blend and for the wafers to soften.

  • You can use any brand of vanilla pudding mix, but Jell-O is the most recommended for the traditional flavor and texture.

  • If you’re in a rush, you can let it chill for 4 hours, but the overnight method gives the best texture.
