How to Make the Best White Bread from Scratch – Santa Rosa Homestead

  • Author: Mary
  • Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes (including rising time)
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x

Description

A simple yet delicious recipe for homemade white bread that’s soft, fluffy, and perfect for any occasion. Made from scratch with basic ingredients, this bread offers the taste of homemade goodness right from your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp softened butter

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and stir gently. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes bubbly and foamy.

  • Mix the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Pour in the yeast mixture and softened butter. Stir until the dough begins to form.

  • Knead the Dough:
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a small amount of flour at a time as needed.

  • Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

  • Shape the Dough:
After the dough has risen, punch it down gently and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

  • Second Rise:
Cover the loaf pan with a towel and let the dough rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until it has risen just above the top of the pan.

  • Bake:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the dough has finished rising, place it in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  • Cool and Serve:
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy your homemade white bread!

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the top of the loaf with butter right after baking.
  • You can substitute part of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a healthier version.
  • Make sure the water is warm but not hot (around 110°F or 43°C) to properly activate the yeast.
