  • Yield: 8-10 servings 1x

Description

This Greek Honey Cake is a rich and flavorful dessert, combining warm spices like cinnamon with the sweet, floral taste of honey. The cake is soaked in a honey syrup and filled with crunchy walnuts, creating a perfect balance of textures and flavors. It’s a delicious, comforting treat that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Cake:

    • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free option)

    • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

    • ¼ teaspoon salt

    • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

    • 1 teaspoon orange zest

    • ¾ cup butter (or dairy-free butter)

    • ¾ cup white sugar

    • 3 large eggs

    • ¼ cup milk

    • 1 cup chopped walnuts

    For the Honey Syrup:

    • 1 cup white sugar

    • 1 cup honey

    • ¾ cup water

    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.

  • Make the cake: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and orange zest.

  • In a separate large bowl, cream the butter and white sugar together until light and fluffy.

  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the milk and continue to mix until fully combined.

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  • Gently fold in the chopped walnuts.

  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

  • Make the honey syrup: While the cake is baking, combine the white sugar, honey, water, and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the syrup thickens slightly, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat.

  • When the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes.

  • Soak the cake: Once the cake has cooled slightly, pour the warm honey syrup over the cake, ensuring it soaks into the entire surface.

  • Allow the cake to cool completely, absorbing the syrup, before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • This cake can be made a day in advance, as the flavors improve as it sits.

  • You can substitute the walnuts with other nuts, like almonds or pistachios, if desired.

  • For a dairy-free version, use plant-based butter and milk.
