Churro French Toast: A Sweet and Spicy Twist on a Classic

  • Author: Mary
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings (2 slices per serving) 1x

Description

This twist on classic French toast brings the flavors of a churro to breakfast! Soft, fluffy brioche or challah bread is soaked in a cinnamon-vanilla custard and fried to golden perfection, then coated in cinnamon-sugar for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 thick slices of day-old brioche or challah bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • Butter, for frying

Instructions

  • Prepare the cinnamon-sugar coating:
In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Set aside.

  • Make the custard:
In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.

  • Soak the bread:
Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated. Let the bread soak for a few seconds to absorb the liquid.

  • Fry the French toast:
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter to coat the surface. Once the butter is melted and bubbling, add the soaked bread slices. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  • Coat in cinnamon-sugar:
Once the French toast is cooked, immediately dredge each slice in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, pressing gently to ensure the coating sticks.

  • Serve and enjoy:
Serve the churro French toast warm with additional toppings like maple syrup, whipped cream, or fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of whole milk.
  • If you prefer, you can skip the cinnamon-sugar coating and just top with powdered sugar or maple syrup.
  • This recipe works best with slightly stale, day-old bread, as it soaks up the custard more effectively.
